2018 BMW X3 Blows Away the Competition in Calgary AB


Technological leadership: the BMW X3 and its competitors.

The launch of the BMW X3 in 2003 established the premium mid-size SAV/SUV segment, and it has been one of the fastest-growing vehicle categories globally ever since. No competitor has been able to ignore this trend. In addition to the BMW X3, the Audi Q5, the Mercedes GLC (the successor to the GLK), the Lexus RX350, the Acura RDX, Infiniti QX50 and the Jaguar F-Pace are vying for customers. Additional, more indirect competitors include the recently launched Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Volvo XC60- and the Discovery Sport.

Like its two predecessor generations, the new BMW X3 counts among the most agile and sporting vehicles in this segment. With its rear-biased all-wheel drive, the BMW X3 delivers a superb level of agility that almost no competitor - can match. The new BMW X3 also represents the benchmark with its comprehensive range of innovative vehicle connectivity features and assistance systems.

Audi Q5: sporty but conservatively styled.

The design of the second Audi Q5 generation launched in February now bears a much greater similarity to that of the larger Q7. The interior, too, has seen visual changes, along with the introduction of a new cockpit architecture. Updates have also been made to the car's connectivity features and driver assistance systems. The Q5 now features an optional traffic jam assist, for example, which even assumes some steering tasks at speeds up to 65 km/h, taking a small step towards semi-automated driving. The Q5 has a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine with 252 hp and 273 lb-ft torque. The SQ5 sports version (354 hp and 369 lb-ft torque), which is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 gas engine. Its slightly lower output compared to the BMW X3 M40i results in significantly inferior acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h. But the four-cylinder versions too have an explicitly sporty character. In the process, Audi is gradually moving away from mechanically controlled all-wheel drive systems. Some versions of the new Q5 now use the electronically controlled "quattro ultra" all-wheel drive. BMW has been using an equivalent system, the intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive, for many years now.

Mercedes-Benz GLC: less sporting ability, inferior connectivity.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC launched in mid-2015 is the successor to the GLK and thus represents the Mercedes brand's second mid-size SUV generation. With a less angular design than the GLK, the GLC feels like a C-Class made to look like an SUV. All engines are from the C-Class. Their power output ranges from 241 hp/273 lb-ft torque to 362 hp/384 lb-ft torque. All GLC driver assistance systems such as the lane keeping assist, distance warning and blind spot assist along with the vehicle's connectivity features are also taken straight from the C-Class. The 4Matic all-wheel drive, which has a fixed torque split, comes as standard in all versions. This means that the GLC falls well short of both the sporty performance and the efficiency of the BMW X3. The GLC also lacks an intelligent emergency call, a Concierge Service and a digital mobility assistant equivalent to BMW Connected (+), and there is also no Active Lane Keeping assistant.

Jaguar F-Pace: a large car that doesn't feel spacious.

The Jaguar F-Pace is the British brand's first foray into the SUV segment. The result is a lifestyle SUV that is a little larger than the new BMW X3 in almost every respect. Only its height is 24 millimeters (1-inch) lower. The spaciousness of the interior is compromised by the sloping roof, which makes the cabin feel less airy. The sense of space and usability are also compromised by the relatively small, angled rear window. Moreover, the media have criticized the average look and feel of the materials used in the interior. When taken on the road, the F-Pace suffers from an uncomfortably stiff suspension set-up, without gaining corresponding benefits in handling. And the F-Pace is also inferior to the new BMW X3 in terms of driver assistance systems, vehicle connectivity features, fuel consumption and emissions, in some cases by a considerable margin.
