BMW: Heading to a Greener Future With New Partnership
April 05 2023,
Today, car buyers are not just looking for style and speed. Most are looking for vehicles that benefit the environment. The auto industry is slowly going green, and everything within the vehicle is now changing. From the upholstery materials to metal for parts, all materials are sustainable.
This shift in the industry has given rise to several partnerships - the latest being between BMW and Rio Tinto. Both are leaders in their industries and have come together to create sustainable and responsible supply chains.
What Does The Partnership Entail?
Per this partnership, Rio Tinto will provide aluminium that is responsibly sourced to BMW’s production plant in South Carolina. This will be used from 2024 in body components. Rio Tinto’s hydro operations in Canada will produce low-carbon aluminum and combine it with recycled content. This will reduce CO2 emissions by almost 70%.
Both companies have signed an MoU. This will ensure that technicians from both companies will work together to embed low-carbon solutions with BMW’s supply chains and also ensure the quality of vehicles does not drop. Rio Tinto and BMW will also begin work to deploy START. START will provide supply chain traceability to all customers. It will also provide information to customers about ESG standards and provenance.
